Marburg Virus Disease is an infectious, hemorrhagic fever that is transmitted from a reservoir host, the fruit bat Rousettus aegyptiacus, to people. Transmission is typically through direct contact with body fluids (blood, saliva, sweat, feces, vomit, amniotic fluid and semen) or objects/materials infected with these fluids.
The first human cases were recognized in 1967 in Marburg and Frankfurt, Germany, and Belgrade, Yugoslavia (now Serbia). A total of 31 laboratory workers and their family members contracted the disease while working with tissues from African green monkeys imported from Uganda.
